Adapting Oriental Rugs To Contemporary Tastes

Even though fine antique and traditional oriental rugs make up a large share of the market, today’s focus is becoming stronger in custom designs, in decorative colors often in nontraditional sizes. “You can basically get anything you want”, says Marianne Donahue. As part owner of J.Namnoun Oriental Rug Gallery in Hartford, CT, Marianne has to keep her eye on modern trends in home decor. These one of a kind hand-knotted rugs made in Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, Romania and India, from natural vegetal dyes are bringing together an old art form to contemporary living.

One of the more popular vintage modern rug styles are the Gabbeh designs. Originally these rugs were shaggy and coarsely woven. Early Gabbehs were very naive and primitive, something you might put in a kid’s room. In time the weavers adapted their technique to what we have today: rugs that are beautiful, multi-dimensional, incorporating amazing blocks of color combinations with impromptu irregularities, mixing flat and pile weaves.

Although a custom design Gabbeh may take months to make, the J.Namnoun Oriental Rug Gallery has a wide range of rugs on hand.
